Here's how older people can divorce without breaking the bank

Getting a divorce is hardly uncommon for married couples anymore. Many marriages in Georgia and throughout the country do not last until "death do us part" these days -- and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. People going into a marriage want it to succeed, of course, but when a couple realizes that the drawbacks of being together outweigh the benefits, a divorce may be in their best interests.

This is even true for older couples -- not just people who have been remarried late in life, but those who have been together for decades. Divorces for people over 50, a subset of divorces known as "gray divorces," have been on the rise for some time.

In fact, the divorce rate for people over 50 actually doubled between 1990 and 2014, according to figures from the National Center for Family & Marriage Research. And the rate climbed even faster for couples over 65.

Seniors who are going through a divorce may be reluctant to initiate the process for fear of a long, drawn-out and potentially expensive process. However, there are ways to avoid these potential stumbling blocks. One method that might make sense for older couples is divorce mediation.

Unlike a traditional divorce or a trial, where attorneys and their law firms can see their fees get paid month after month as a case drags on, divorce mediation is a relatively inexpensive solution where parties come together to negotiate a mutually beneficial settlement. The process may take a matter of hours, rather than days, weeks or months, and participants are often pleased to avoid the time and expense.

A firm devoted to mediation in Atlanta may be the best option for divorcing couples to take the next step in their personal lives.
